The program of the Days was a very extensive one and included a meeting between J. Birks, Chairman of Riga City Hall, and V.I. Matvienko, Governor of St. Petersburg, and much networking and idea sharing between Latvian and Russian business people, as well as an itinerary of recitals and concerts attended by massive numbers of Petersburgers.
As the Baltic Meetings project initiator, the Ambassador Hotel was one of the organizers of the Days of Riga in St. Petersburg. The Ambassador Hotel provided over 70 rooms for the delegation headed by J. Birks, Chairman of Riga City Hall.
J. Birks, Chief Architect of Riga J. Dripe, and V.A. Dementieva, Chair of St. Petersburg City Hall’s Committee for Government Supervision, Use and Protection of Historical and Cultural Landmarks made presentations at the conference entitled “The Role of Architecture and Design in the Long-Term Development of Riga and St. Petersburg.” Latvian Sculptor Regina Deisman’s exhibition was on display in the lobbies of the Ambassador Hotel.
An official reception on behalf of St. Petersburg and Riga City Halls was held at the Le Vernissage restaurant the night of 21 September. The guests were welcomed by L.A. Kostkina, Vice Governor of St. Petersburg, and J. Birks, Chairman of Riga City Hall, who both spoke about historical similarities between St. Petersburg and Riga, and expressed high hopes for further bilateral relations between the two cities.
